Ariel G. Loewy passed away on February 13, 2001 from complications of a stroke. Professor Loewy had a long and productive research career studying transglutaminases and isopeptidase, and was best known for his work on blood coagulation factor XIII. Many of us enjoyed catching up with Ariel at the transglutaminase and crosslinking meeting in Lyon, and will miss his presence at future meetings.
Those of you who would like to send a message of condolence or support may do so by writing to Ariel's daughter Ridley and widow Martha at: MarthaRidley@aol.com.

Ariel G. Loewy, Professor of Biology from 1953 to 2000, and Department Chair for many of those years, died February 13, 2001. In the 1950s, Dr. Loewy, with his colleagues, designed and implemented the Department's cell biology curriculum, recognized as the first undergraduate curriculum in cell biology in the country. Internationally renowned as a creative and accomplished researcher, Dr. Loewy was also a devoted and passionate teacher. To his research students, many of whom went on to build outstanding careers in science and medicine, he was an inspiring and trusted mentor. This award, established in his memory, recognizes the accomplishments of a graduating senior in Biology, whose efforts and accomplishments in senior research incorporate the rigor and diligence of experimental science, and express the exhilaration of investigative research that marked Dr. Loewy's life's work. The winner is chosen by the Biology faculty and announced at an annual Departmental function. Dr. Loewy's scientific and academic colleagues, family and friends are delighted to continue his legacy of promoting innovative undergraduate research with this award.
